As we approach Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day honoring the life of a true American hero, I get inspired by his most enduring legacy: the power of a single voice to spark a revolution. Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to justice and equality through nonviolent action reshaped our nation and continues to inspire generations.

But this year, Dr. King’s fight wasn’t solitary. Behind him stood the echoes of his powerful words, forever reminding us of the unfinished symphony of equality that he so nobly orchestrated. Behind him stood Coretta Scott King, a fierce warrior in her own right, blazing an equally bright light in the fight for justice. Her steadfast support and her own dedication to social justice were instrumental in amplifying Dr. King’s message. Together, they sparked a movement; not just through words, but through their leadership, their accountability, and the passion they ignited in millions. For decades after Dr. King’s tragic passing, Coretta continued his work with unwavering resolve, ensuring his legacy lives on through countless hearts and minds. They were the catalyst for action, the fuel that propelled ordinary people to rise up and demand change.

Let’s be honest: America still has work to do. But Dr. King’s legacy isn’t about dwelling on the darkness. It’s about finding the light; the light within ourselves, the spark of compassion that ignites action. That’s why this year, we’re not just “celebrating,”we’re choosing to serve.

Today, we honor both Dr. and Coretta Scott King. We remember their courage, their love, and their unwavering belief in a better tomorrow. But more than just celebrating, let us be inspired to take action.

Reflect:Take time to learn about Dr. and Coretta Scott King beyond the headlines. Dive into their words, their struggles, and their triumphs. Understand the context of their fight and how it continues to resonate in our present.

Serve: Dr. King famously said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Find a way to give back to your community, whether it’s volunteering your time, supporting a cause you care about, or simply practicing empathy and kindness in your daily interactions. Yes, please enjoy the holiday and the time off. We encourage you to engage in virtual community events or volunteer in person.

Shine: We all have the potential to be a light in the world. Be the voice for those who are voiceless. Stand up for what you believe in. Embrace diversity and inclusion. Be the change you want to see.

In the spirit of the Kings, let us commit to building a more just and equitable world, one act of kindness, one voice raised, one step at a time. May their legacy continue to guide us, reminding us that even the smallest flame can ignite a powerful movement for change.

Have a meaningful MLK Day, filled with reflection, service, and a renewed commitment to making the world a better place.

Boothers Busting the Model Minority Myth

The continent of Asia is vast, made up of 48 countries – each with different cultural customs, landscapes, languages, religions, cuisines and more. In spite of this diversity, Asian communities continue to be stereotyped and classified as monolithic. One way that society places Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in a box is the Model Minority Myth.
